An SAF short-term contract can look attractive when ORD leaves a few months before university or another job. You already understand the environment, the income may be steadier than ad-hoc work, and you may not want to start from zero elsewhere.

The difficult part is that “STC” is not enough information to make the decision. The official public pages reviewed for this guide do not publish one SAF-wide table for short-term-contract eligibility, duties, pay, bonuses, posting, or application timing. Those details must come from the actual written offer and its authorised contract owner.

This guide shows what to get in writing and how to compare the offer without borrowing another person's rank, vocation, unit, or salary. It is unofficial. Your contract, MINDEF or SAF instructions, and authorised HR or recruitment advice override it.

Signing on during NS gets confusing because Reddit answers often mix three different questions: whether you can apply, which scheme you are applying for, and whether your NS rank or vocation will carry across.

The official answer is narrower. CMPB says someone found suitable for regular service before enlistment serves regular service in lieu of full-time NS, and it also says you can sign on as a regular three months before your Operationally Ready Date. Beyond that, each Service or Home Team agency controls its own assessment, scheme, training, and posting process.
