SPF and SCDF NSF Ranks and Allowance Guide
Home Team NSF allowance is not one flat number and rank is not the same as vocation. For both SPF and SCDF, CMPB publishes a rank component and a vocation component, with meal allowance handled separately when its conditions apply.
The clean way to check a payment is to identify the correct Service, official rank, vocation tier and duty-period records before adding anything.
This guide is unofficial. Current CMPB tables, MHA NS Portal records, payslips, unit instructions and official replies override it. Amounts and pages were checked on 31 August 2026.
Quick version
- Use the SPF table for Police full-time National Servicemen and the SCDF table for Civil Defence full-time National Servicemen.
- CMPB says total monthly NS allowance comprises rank allowance plus vocation allowance.
- As checked on 31 August 2026, starting rank allowance runs from S$715 at the entry rank to S$1,455 at the highest NSF rank listed on each Service page.

- Public tables do not promise when a particular person will be promoted or which vocation will be assigned.
- For a mismatch, compare the payslip period, effective rank date, vocation, training status and meal-eligible duties before asking the unit pay route to review it.
Start With The Correct Service
SPF and SCDF have different rank names and vocation lists even where the published allowance amounts align.
Do not use an SAF rank chart to decode a Home Team record. CMPB's rank pages state that rank shows command status within each organisation's hierarchy. The images on those pages are the official reference for insignia; this article does not reproduce them.
Record four fields from the official record:
- Service: SPF or SCDF;
- exact rank name;
- exact vocation or appointment;
- date each status took effect.
An informal title used in conversation may not be the payroll label.
SPF Rank Allowance
The current SPF page lists these starting monthly rank allowances:

The table is not a promotion schedule. It does not say when an individual will move between ranks or whether training, appointment or performance will produce a particular outcome.
SCDF Rank Allowance
The current SCDF page lists:

Again, the table maps an official rank to an allowance amount. It does not establish course selection, promotion timing or appointment eligibility.
Rank Allowance Versus Vocation Allowance
CMPB says the total NS allowance comprises both components:
rank allowance + vocation allowance = total monthly NS allowance
Both Services publish the same four vocation-allowance amounts:

The vocations inside each tier differ by Service. For example, SPF's current list places trainee and various support appointments in Tier 1, selected operational and support roles in Tiers 2 and 3, and Police Tactical Trooper roles in Tier 4. SCDF's current list places recruits and general trainee or service-support roles in Tier 1, selected headquarters or specialist roles in Tier 2, certain station or instructor roles in Tier 3, and specified frontline Fire and Rescue roles in Tier 4.
Use the live table to match the exact vocation. Do not infer a tier from how demanding the work feels or from another person's payslip.
Two examples
These are arithmetic examples, not personal entitlements:
- an SPF Special Constable 2 at a listed Tier 1 vocation would map to S$740 + S$75 = S$815;
- an SCDF Corporal at a listed Tier 3 vocation would map to S$790 + S$300 = S$1,090.
The official rank, vocation and effective period must all match before the addition is meaningful.
Where Meal Allowance Fits
Both current pages say meal allowance is given in place of cookhouse food or rations and that eligibility begins after training at the training institution.
The published rates are:
- S$8 for one continuous six-hour tour of duty;
- S$16 for one continuous 12-hour tour; and
- S$24 for one continuous 24-hour tour.
Meal allowance is therefore tied to eligible duty tours. Do not add a fixed meal amount to every monthly calculation or treat it as a substitute for rank or vocation allowance.
If a meal entry looks wrong, compare the exact duty dates and tour lengths with the payslip period and unit record.
Why Public Tables Do Not Predict Promotion Timing
Rank allowance tables answer “what amount maps to this recorded rank?” They do not answer:
- when promotion occurs;
- which course or performance threshold controls it;
- whether every intake follows the same sequence;
- whether a temporary appointment changes rank;
- whether a vocation switch changes the allowance immediately; or
- how backdating is handled in an individual case.
Use the official rank or course record. If the expected effective date and payslip differ, ask the unit to confirm which date was transmitted to payroll.

How To Check A Payment That Looks Wrong
Build one line for the affected month:

Then ask:
“For payslip period [month], my official record shows [rank] from [date] and [vocation] from [date]. The current CMPB table maps those to [amounts]. Could you confirm the effective payroll dates and whether a correction or later adjustment applies?”
Do not publish the payslip or personal identifiers in a forum. Use the current unit or MHA NS pay channel.

- Using an SAF rank or allowance table for SPF or SCDF.
- Treating vocation allowance as the full monthly allowance.
- Adding meal allowance as a fixed monthly amount.
- Using an informal appointment name instead of the recorded vocation.
- Assuming promotion timing from a cohort anecdote.
- Comparing different payslip periods without effective dates.
- Treating the highest published amount as a likely personal outcome.
- Relying on a saved table without checking the current CMPB page.
