A recruiter offering an interview next Tuesday is encouraging. It becomes a problem if you confirm before checking whether you can attend. Before ORD, a good job-search plan combines interview preparation with an honest account of your availability.

This guide focuses on arranging and preparing for interviews. It does not grant time off, establish an employment start date or replace your Service's instructions.

Quick version
  • Confirm availability before accepting an interview slot.
  • Check the applicable unit permission for time away.
  • Prepare specific examples and an honest start-date answer.

Put availability in writing for yourself

Start with your confirmed ORD and current schedule. Mark approved leave separately from leave you hope to take. Keep a private list of possible interview windows that includes travel, changing clothes and returning for your next required activity.

Do not assume that a video call needs no permission because you can join from a phone. Location, device use, privacy and duty requirements still matter. Plan to use an appropriate civilian location during a period when you are authorised to be available.

If you do not yet have a reliable window, tell the recruiter that you are checking and give a realistic time by which you will reply. Do not label a tentative arrangement as confirmed.

Ask about time away without assuming an entitlement

CMPB's SAF leave page describes specific arrangements for university admissions and scholarship interviews or tests. Those academic provisions should not be read as an automatic entitlement for a private-sector job interview.

Ask your unit what applies to your employment interview and what approval is needed. Supply the invitation, date, duration and travel requirement if requested. If you are serving in SPF or SCDF, obtain your own Service's guidance rather than applying an SAF page to your situation.

Wait for the actual decision before promising attendance. If the request cannot be accommodated, contact the employer early with alternative slots.

Send a useful scheduling reply

Keep the recruiter message short and specific:

Thank you for the invitation. I am currently completing National Service and am checking availability for the proposed time. Could you also accommodate [alternative window]? I will confirm by [time or date].

Once approved, confirm the format, address or meeting link, expected duration, interviewer names if available and anything you should prepare. Check whether an assessment must be completed before the conversation.

You do not need to explain restricted training details to justify a scheduling constraint. “I have a service commitment at that time” is clearer than sharing a duty roster or operational schedule.

Prepare evidence for this particular job

Read the vacancy and select two or three requirements you can support with examples. For each, write the situation, your own action and the result. Distinguish what the team achieved from what you personally did.

A practical preparation sheet might have three columns: requirement, example and evidence. An example could concern organising work, communicating a problem or learning a new process. Use ordinary language that a civilian interviewer can understand.

Avoid inventing metrics, exaggerating responsibility or presenting access to military systems as a portfolio. Share only permitted information. A specific, modest example is easier to defend in follow-up questions than a sweeping claim about leadership.

Practise the questions you can predict

Prepare a concise explanation of why the role interests you, what relevant experience you bring and what you still need to learn. Practise aloud so the answer sounds like a conversation rather than a written essay.

Have a clear answer about availability. State a start date only when it is compatible with your confirmed service commitments and personal plans. If it remains tentative, say so explicitly and explain when you can confirm.

Prepare questions about the actual work, supervision and learning expectations. The interview is also your chance to understand whether the job matches what you can offer and want to develop.

Use the NS transition resources

The LifeSG guide updated in July 2026 describes SkillsFuture@NS fairs in the last three to six months of NS and employability workshops covering practical career skills. Check OneNS and your unit's current arrangements for access and scheduling.

Use a fair or workshop with a concrete objective: clarify a job requirement, obtain feedback on an example or identify the next recruitment step. Attendance alone does not create an application or offer.

Close the loop after the interview

Record any requested documents, assessments and next dates. Send only what was requested through the employer's proper channel. If an offer arrives, read the terms and confirm the start-date commitment before accepting it.

Update the employer promptly if an availability fact changes. Keep your unit's approval and the employer's appointment confirmation separate so you can check both.

For the written application, see putting NS experience on a resume. For service evidence, see NS transcripts and testimonials.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do academic interview arrangements cover a job interview?

Do not assume they do. The CMPB page describes university and scholarship arrangements; ask the unit about your employment interview.

Can I promise a start date before ORD?

Only make a commitment compatible with your confirmed service obligations. State uncertainty clearly if the date is tentative.

What should I prepare for the interview?

Relevant examples, evidence you may share, a clear availability answer and questions about the actual job.
