SAF NSF Allowance: Rank and Vocation Table

Practical guides for Singapore NSFs and NSMen

When people compare NSF allowance online, the number often loses its two parts: rank allowance and vocation allowance. That makes a valid question about an official amount turn into a comparison between unlike records.

This guide is the SAF-only table and checking method. It does not turn National Service into an hourly-wage calculation, predict a posting or promotion, or promise a personal amount. Your OneNS record, payslip, unit instruction and current CMPB table override this unofficial guide.

Quick version
  • CMPB says total monthly SAF NS allowance is rank allowance plus vocation allowance.
  • The current SAF table lists starting rank allowance from S$715 for Recruit or Private to S$1,455 for Lieutenant.
  • CMPB lists vocation allowance of S$75, S$225, S$300 or S$500, depending on the published vocation category.
  • A 2025 MINDEF factsheet's Tier 1 totals include the S$75 minimum vocation allowance; do not confuse those totals with the rank-only table.
  • SAF NSFs do not receive a separate meal allowance beyond monthly NS allowance, according to MINDEF's May 2026 written reply.

Start With Two Components

CMPB says an SAF NSF receives a rank allowance and a vocation allowance. The monthly total is the two added together:

rank allowance + vocation allowance = monthly NS allowance

That is the useful starting point for a payslip question. A rank by itself is not the total, and a vocation-tier amount is not the total either.

The tables below are an official-public baseline checked on 14 September 2026. They are not a timetable for when a particular NSF will be promoted, posted, back-paid or moved to another tier.

SAF Starting Rank Allowance

GroupRankStarting monthly rank allowance
EnlisteeRecruit or PrivateS$715
EnlisteeLance CorporalS$740
EnlisteeCorporalS$790
EnlisteeCorporal First ClassS$835

SpecialistSecond SergeantS$1,160
SpecialistFirst SergeantS$1,235
OfficerOfficer CadetS$1,010
OfficerSecond LieutenantS$1,265
OfficerLieutenantS$1,455

The wording “starting” matters. This public table maps an official rank to an amount. It does not state that an NSF will reach a particular rank, when that would happen, or whether a course, appointment or personal record will result in promotion.

SAF Vocation Allowance

CMPB groups SAF vocations into four published allowance levels:

Vocation category in the current CMPB tableMonthly vocation allowance
Service and Technical vocationsS$75
All combatants except the listed higher categoriesS$225
Aircrew; Armour, Guards and Infantry; specified Medical Response Force or SCDF-ambulance deployments; SeagoingS$300
CBR Defence or Explosive Ordnance Disposal; Commando; Naval DiverS$500

Use the live CMPB category, your official vocation record and the effective period on the payslip. Do not guess a tier from an informal job name, a beret, a training anecdote or how demanding somebody else's role sounds.

Three Arithmetic Examples

These examples show the published addition only. They are not statements of what any reader is entitled to receive.

  • A Recruit or Private in a published S$75 vocation category maps to S$715 + S$75 = S$790.
  • A Corporal in a published S$225 category maps to S$790 + S$225 = S$1,015.
  • A Third Sergeant in a published S$300 category maps to S$1,055 + S$300 = S$1,355.

MINDEF's 2025 allowance-review factsheet reported Tier 1 totals, including the minimum S$75 vocation amount. This is why its S$790 Recruit example is not in conflict with CMPB's S$715 Recruit rank figure: the two pages are showing different layers of the same calculation.

Do Not Add A Separate SAF Meal Allowance

This is a common cross-Service mix-up. In a May 2026 written reply, MINDEF said SAF NSFs do not receive an additional meal allowance beyond monthly NS allowance. It says the monthly allowance provides for basic personal upkeep including meals; the reply also describes cookhouse meals or fresh rations in relevant SAF operational settings.

That does not decide every food, lodging or duty arrangement. It does mean an SAF calculation should not automatically add the Home Team meal-allowance rules as a third fixed monthly component.

How To Check A Number On Your Payslip

Write down one line for the affected period before assuming there is an error:

FieldWhat to check
Payslip periodThe month and dates actually covered
Recorded rankExact rank and its effective date
Recorded vocationExact official vocation and its effective date
Current CMPB amountsThe relevant rank amount and vocation category
Amount receivedThe figure shown on your official record
DifferenceWhat remains after comparing like-for-like dates

If the public table and your effective dates still do not explain the difference, use your unit's official pay route or OneNS record instead of posting a payslip or personal data in a forum. The NSF allowance and payslip guide covers first payday, bank-account updates and an ORD-month pro-rating question.

What This Table Cannot Tell You

Public tables do not establish:

  • your exact vocation or posting;
  • a promotion date or course outcome;
  • whether an allowance change will be processed immediately or later;
  • a personal hardship decision; or
  • an hourly-wage equivalent for a role with training, duty and operational arrangements that vary.

If money is tight, CMPB says NSFs are encouraged to approach unit commanders about financial assistance and other avenues of help. The NSF financial assistance guide explains the practical conversation without promising a decision.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is S$715 the full monthly SAF NSF allowance for a Recruit?

No. CMPB lists S$715 as the starting rank allowance for a Recruit or Private. The total monthly NS allowance also includes the applicable vocation allowance. CMPB's published S$75 minimum vocation category would make that arithmetic example S$790.

Does every SAF NSF receive meal allowance?

No separate SAF meal allowance should be assumed. MINDEF's May 2026 written reply says SAF NSFs do not receive an additional meal allowance beyond monthly NS allowance; operational food arrangements can still depend on the setting and official instruction.

Can the public table tell me when I will be promoted or posted?

No. It maps official recorded ranks and vocation categories to published amounts. It does not publish a personal promotion timetable, posting result or processing date.
