How to Put National Service on Your Resume
“Does National Service count as work experience?” is usually the wrong first question.
An employer is not choosing between a label marked “work” and one marked “not work”. They are trying to see whether your verified experience is relevant to the role, whether your claims are specific, and whether you can explain them consistently in an interview.
The useful job is therefore to translate what you actually did during full-time NS without inflating rank, technical scope, leadership, security access or civilian-equivalent experience.
This guide is unofficial. Your Certificate of Service package, National Service Transcript, testimonial, course records and current official instructions are the source of truth. Do not include sensitive or non-public information just to make a bullet sound impressive.
