Le Boudin

About the Song

"Le Boudin" is the official march and anthem of the French Foreign Legion. Its first version was probably composed around 1860. "Le Boudin" refers to a type of blood sausage (black pudding), but in the 19th century, legionnaires also nicknamed their rolled/packed tents "boudin" because they resembled sausages when attached to the top of their backpacks.

About the Lyrics

The refrain humorously states that the boudin (bonus food) is for the Alsatians, Swiss, and Lorrains, but not for the Belgians, because "they are not so good shooters." This jocular rivalry dates back to the Franco-Prussian War of 1870-1871.
